Brentor Cycling Events

he four rides below are organised by Jim Wilkinson on behalf of Tavistock Wheelers. This local club has grown rapidly from a small group of local riders a few years ago, to a thriving and popular club that has a large membership and a strong presence in the historic stannary town of Tavistock. There are regular Sunday rides taking varied routes to the surrounding countryside including the moors and to the many points of local interest.

Event HQ:

The event HQ is at Brentor village hall (
here) providing both the start and finish location for all rides.

There is limited free parking by the side of the hall. If this is full, please park on the road down the hill towards the old station house at the bottom of the hill. Park ONLY on the left hand side. If the events prove popular and extra parking is needed, park on the other side of the old station house where the road rises steeply. The locals are rightly proud of their lovely village so please be considerate and do not block the road.

Ride and Entry Information:

If you are an audax member, the preferred way to enter the events is via the Audax UK website using PayPal. Just find the ride you want to enter and that will lead to payment using the PayPal site (credit & debit cards accepted).

You can also enter any of the events by post using a standard Audax entry form which you can download
here. If you use the general purpose form, please return it and include 2 SAEs addressed to ...

The entry fees for each of the Audax rides are modest:

3:50 UKP for the new 50Km (31 mile) Roadford Lake,

4:00 UKP for the 103Km (65 mile) Darmoor Delight,

4:50 UKP for the 162Km (100 mile) Devon Dash and

5:00 UKP for the 205Km (125 mile) Moor & Coast.

The fee includes a tea or coffee drink at the start and a drink plus food at the finish. The food will be limited to a slice of cake or a sandwich - whatever I can get hold of on the day before. (BTW: the prices increase for longer events to cover the larger preparation costs).

All rides require you to be self-sufficient. There are no mechanics en-route and no food or drink is provided on the way. However, at the start you will be given a Brevet card with the places you must pass by or through. "Controls" are places where you must stop to get your Brevet card stamped and timed. These are all places that will welcome you, provide refreshments for you to buy and have stamps to verify the time of your arrival. There are also points along each ride where you need to answer a question on your Brevet card to prove that you have been to that point.

Important: if you are a paid up member of Audax UK, CTC or British Cycling (BC) member, then you will have valid insurance for these rides (though BC members do need to check that their membership level includes ride insurance).

If you are
not covered by membership insurance, an extra £2 must be added to the entry fee to provide you with temporary 3rd party insurance for your ride. This is made clear on the entry form. Remember - no insurance, no ride!

What are Audax rides?

These rides are organised by Tavistock Wheelers and run under Audax UK administration. If you are an Audax member, you can skip the remainder of this section. But if Audax rides are new to you, this brief introduction below may help.

Audax rides are timed rides, but there are no winners or losers. You can ride solo or in a group. But it is important to understand that these rides are not a race. Finishing times are recorded, but not published. They are for your own personal achievement. Audax rides are often challenging and these rides, being in the SouthWest, are satisfyingly hard!

You will get a "Brevet" card at the start of the ride that lists all places on the ride and where your times can be recorded. These "places" define the locations that are either control or information points. A control point is a place where you have to get your card stamped and the time recorded. Control points are usually the cafe stops along the way. An information point is a place where there is a question that you need to answer (e.g. what is the distance on the signpost (SP) to 'Wherever'. You need to provide the answers to assure the organisers you have completed the ride - it's that simple.

Unlike 'sportive' rides, there are no marshals en-route, so you must follow the supplied route sheet which will be posted to you a week or two before the event**. Every attempt is made to make the route-sheet as accurate as possible, but sometimes instructions can be mis-interpreted so, if you’re new to audax rides and unfamiliar with the area, it can sometimes help to keep in a group with someone who knows the way.

** although route sheets are the traditional method of route description, GPX track files are available on this site for uploading to a GPS unit. These track files are limited to 500 points so they can be used with a wide variety of GPS units. As a result, the GPX files may be split into parts so they can retain sufficient accuracy for the longer routes.

Audax rides have minimum and maximum speed limits for each ride, so you cannot arrive at a control point before the minimum time and you must leave before the maximum time. Of course, if you arrive at a control point ahead of time, you then have more time to enjoy a rest with some refreshments. That said, minimum and maximum times are based on the known course difficulty and it would be surprising to this organiser if riders could ride faster than the allotted upper speed limit. Essentially, the times are set so that even the fastest riders will not reach the control points ahead of the control opening time. At the other extreme, controls are set to close at a certain time to avoid open-ended times. You should be comfortable with being able to ride long distances significantly faster than the slowest speed designated for the route because the closing times give no allowance for en-route stops.

It is important to note that everyone rides at their own best pace and riders are expected to be self-sufficient throughout the ride with tools and pump to handle normal bike problems. You can ride with others or ride solo as you desire. The emphasis on self-sufficiency means that you should use a reliable bike with sufficient gears and enough tools to fix common problems including, of course, punctures.

Many parts on the routes are remote, mobile phone reception is patchy and there are few, if any, bike service facilities en-route. There are a few service garages en-route, but they will be only able to provide very limited help even if they are open on Sundays.

The three longest rides (200Km, 160Km and 100Km) all have the standard Audax limits with a lower speed limit of 15Kph (9.3 mph) and an upper speed limit of 30Kph (18.6mph).

The shortest ride (50Km) has lower speed limits with the slowest speed of 12.5Kph (7.75mph) and highest speed of 25Kph (15.5mph). This is because riders on this event are likely to be less experienced and probably a bit slower. The aim is to ensure that even the most inexperienced riders have a chance to finish the rides within the time limit.

Please note that Audax UK relaxed the mudguard requirement a few years ago. Using mudguards is recommended as a courtesy to other riders - especially if there is rain, but if you are new to audax rides and have a bike with no mudguards, then do not let that stop you from entering.

About the organiser and the events:

Jim Wilkinson is a member of both the CTC and Audax UK though his cycling background is more audax-based. He moved to West Devon over 6 years ago and revels in the roads and lanes of the region.

The idea of running these CTC Cornwall rides under Audax UK rules was first suggested by Jason Hinton in 2008 after bemoaning the lack of organised rides in the Tamar valley region. With Launceston set between both Bodmin Moor and Dartmoor and with relatively easy access to the north Cornwall coast, there was plenty of scope for great bike rides. The first years events at 100Km and 200Km proved very popular and a new 100 mile "spordax" [sportive + audax] ride was added in 2009 to further encourage cycling in this awesomely scenic region of the British Isles. In 2013, a new 50Km event was added to encourage less experience riders to enjoy the fantastic scenery offered by the Tamar valley and its environs without committing to either of the two big moors with their sometimes intimidating climbs.

The four Brentor rides are 52Km (31 miles), 103Km (63 miles), 160Km (100 miles) and 206Km (128 miles) starting respectively at 08:00, 08:30, 09:00 and 09:30. All four rides are described on the
Routes page on this website including links to a mapping web site for an on-line map for each route. Printable route sheets with distances in both Km and Miles will be made available on-line as soon as I can complete them. Please note that any distances given on route sheets are for guidance only.

If you have a GPS device, it can be pre-loaded with a .gpx (Geo-Position-eXchange) file for each route downloadable from the mapping web site. This makes navigation a snip as long as you faithfully follow the track. The number of .gpx points may need to be filtered for your GPS and the web site
here can do this. Using the routing mode of GPS devices is prone to deviations from the intended route, so it's better to use GPX files.

Note - Google Maps typically underestimates climb values. The climb values given for each ride have been validated by Audax UK and are the definitive values.
